Writer’s Guidelines

The Whip is read by the members of The American Driving Society throughout North America, as well as in Europe and Australia. The Whip contains articles on all aspects of carriage driving both competitive and recreational. We cover Pleasure Driving, Combined Driving, Driven Dressage, Arena Driving Trials, Horse Driving Trials, Traditional Days of Driving in the competitive area. We also include reports on Clinics, Club Activities, the Official Business of the ADS, International News, and we are the official publication of the Hoopes-Addis Education Trust.

In addition, The Whip also features articles on Training, Health and Shoeing issues related to carriage driving, Driver Profiles, Carriage History and Terminology, Harness and Harnessing, Innovations in Carriage Design, and much more.

Simultaneous submissions are discouraged. If articles are accepted elsewhere, please notify the ADS office at once.

Features
Feature stories (1200 to 1500 words) should focus on major topics, including but not limited to the following: Training, Harness (Care of, Correct Fit, Types, etc.) Carriages, History, Major Competitions such as World Championships, or National Championships. Please inquire prior to submission.

Competition Reports
Competition reports (500 – 750 words) should give the reader an overall image of the competition. Writers should remember that they are writing for a national readership and include the location of the competition. Since complete results will be posted on our website, they should not be included in the report, however mentioning championships and other noteworthy awards is perfectly acceptable. No prior inquiry is necessary.

Clinics, Club Activities
Articles covering Clinics and Club Activities (maximum 500 words) should try to provide some educational information (clinics) or an explanation of the club activity. No prior inquiry is necessary.

Shorts and Fillers
We are always interested in short ‘featurettes’ (under 500 words) such as Training Tips, Vet Tips, humor.

Fees for photos and written material are not paid unless agreed upon in advance by the Editor.

Photographs are accepted with manuscripts. They must be digital images of at least 300 dpi. All images submitted must include a written release from the photographer. Photos will be returned ONLY if the note “please return” along with name and address is written on the back of every photograph. You may submit 5-7 photographs of which up to 3 will be selected for publication with articles on Competitions, Clinics or Club Activities. More may be sent and accepted for Feature articles

Rights: Copyright reverts to the author upon publication, however we retain the right under copyright law to reprint your work only as a part of a whole volume – such as The Best of The Whip, or in publicity materials.
